The secrets in the game are fun too and a step up from 2016. 2016 I felt a bit more compelled to do the traversing myself without using the map, but that may have just been because the map in 2016 was slow as molasses and not fun to use.
The auto-map automatically generates where secrets are when you're approaching them, so I find myself often pausing to look at the map after encounters. Finding secrets in Eternal is a bit too easy, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. On one hand, I prefer 2016's commitment to feeling a bit more "real" than Eternal, but on the other Eternal is better able to guide you where you need to go thus keeping the pacing going. Level design is a bit of a toss-up for me, as I'm hot off the heels of Eternal and haven't played 2016 in a bit. This was fine as it opened the game up a bit in a way where I truly was able to choose how I played, but I really do love Eternal's commitment to its mechanics. Doom 2016 was frantic and fun, but I never felt like I truly needed to use every bit of my arsenal. It's fun to have to think so quickly so often that I leave each combat encounter sweating. I like having to juggle all these different mechanics, tbh.
During my first playthrough I did not use the flamethrower much at all, but now that I'm playing on an additional difficulty mode I've found it to be a necessity.
I just don't feel like juggling between the two. I can safely say I've used the ice grenades like once. Combat scenarios were always exhilarating, so having some down time after the fact to engage in challenging yet leisurely platforming was a nice way to change the pace up.Įternal has a few additional mechanics to change up the pace during combat as well, including ice grenades, the flamethrower, and more. are a blast and welcome additions to the series! I know Doom is not known for many of these things, particularly platforming, but I felt that their inclusion greatly improved the pacing of the game. The game mechanics of Doom Eternal outclass 2016's, imo.
